Program: Cresent (Aurora, MN)
Employed with NHS Northstar: 1.6 years, and previous 5 years with ESI
Laura was nominated by her supervisor, Fred, who shared, “The only reason I have not nominated Laura for one of the previous awards is because she doesn’t want to draw attention, but I have come to the determination that ignoring the amazing contributions she has made in the lives of the people who live at the Crescent house would be a disservice to her, and to the spirit of care that we try to live by here.”
Laura is flexible with scheduling, always shows up when she says, and is self-sacrificing in the level of care she consistently gives. She treats the people [at Crescent] like they are part of her own family and makes sure that they are always well cared for.
Laura goes above and beyond for her clients and her team. As an afternoon staff, she was always thinking of new and innovative things to do with the clients, and now as a night shift she always leaves the house clean and ready for the next shift and often makes special breakfasts for the people that live here to make sure their day starts with a smile.
When Fred asked one resident at Crescent what makes Laura a star, they said, “Laura is a good buddy, she’s the best friend, she’s a star!”
We could not agree more and are proud to have Laura here at NHS Northstar!
Congratulations, Laura!
Take-Five
We ask each of our Shining Star winners to complete a quick, “Take-Five” questionnaire so we can get to know them a little more and hopefully inspire others to shine! Laura shared the following:
What motivates you to do your best work every day?
Knowing I have, and will, continue to make a difference in the lives of the people I support, and watching them grow and live their lives. It is a great experience.
What do you love most about working with the individuals you support?
I love doing things with them that they have never done before (roasting hotdogs on a stick, fishing, collecting rocks, walking in nature, riding a bike, and looking for more adventures). Seeing them enjoy these things and having fun is very rewarding for me, and to see the smile on their faces.
What is one skill or quality you have developed in your role that you are most proud of?
I have learned to be more patient and am able to adapt to change. I am a very flexible person and will cover any shift. I’ve also learned to be quick to change the subject when needed.
What is something you do outside of work that you are passionate about?
My passion is being out in nature. I love collecting rocks, fishing, camping, and walking in the woods. I also love to spend time with all my adult children and two grandchildren. They are my world.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone looking to grow in their role or career at NHS Northstar?
Patience and communication are very important. Enjoy every day with the people we support and have fun!
