Programs

Northern Habilitative Services, Inc. began providing services in 1989 to individuals in the In-Home-Family-Support program and currently manages 20 homes where one to four individuals live together. Northern Habilitative Services continues to provide services to children and adults in their family homes. Northern Habilitative Services, Inc. (NHS) was incorporated in October, 1988 in response to the growing need to serve persons with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities in Northeastern Minnesota,specifically St. Louis and Itasca counties.

Overview

NHS-Northstar provides services to persons eligible for the medical assistance waiver program (MR/RC, CADI, TBI). Services are currently provided in small group settings (1-4 individuals) utilizing the foster care model. Additionally, services are provided to children and adults in the family home. This service is called In-Home Family-Support.

NHS-Northstar currently provides programs and supports to 110 individuals and employs over 285 professionals and paraprofessionals. Our programs are located in Northeastern Minnesota from Bovey on the west to Aurora on the east. Agency positions range from entry-level Direct Care Specialists to Program Managers and QMRP.

NHS-Northstar works closely with county social services staff, families, guardians, and clients to develop an individualized program plan. All referrals to our program are through case management at the local county social services department.

NHS-Northstar is licensed through the Minnesota Deptartment of Human Services, St. Louis and Itasca County Social Services Department.

NHS-Northstar creates individual programs to address specific needs in one or more of the following: communications, motor skills, activities of daily living, and behavior management.

Specialized Services

NHS-Northstar Specialized Services is an expansion of options and services to individuals with disabilities. The program philosophy is to support the consumer in the development of a positive lifestyle that is motivated by mature and appropriate choices as they relate to living in one's community. The small natural residential setting fosters such supports and reinforces the development of the positive lifestyle.
